The combined effects of two air pollutants on Phaseolus vulgaris and Vicia faba cultivars were investigated by exposing plants to 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, or 0.8 ppm (v/v) O/sub 3/ with and without 0.4 ppm (v/v) SO/sub 2/ for four hours in controlled environmental chambers. The percentage of unifoliate leaves injured and the severity of injury were scored two to four days after exposure. O/sub 3/ toxicity to Vicia faba was enhanced by SO/sub 2/ which, alone, caused no foliar necrosis. O/sub 3/ toxicity to Phaseolus vulgaris was attenuated in the presence of SO/sub 2/. The combined effects of O/sub 3/ and SO/sub 2/ appeared to vary with species, concentration of pollutants, type of effect measured and environmental conditions. Several factors may be involved in the apparent occurrence of synergistic and antagonistic effects. Chemical reactions between two pollutants may occur in the atmosphere or after contact with foliar tissues resulting in altered phytotoxicity. Individual pollutants can affect stomatal apertures, hence foliar penetration of one pollutant may be changed in the presence of another. Finally, biochemical effects induced by one pollutant may alter plant response to a second pollutant producing combined effects that are more or less than additive.
