Interaction of ozone and bacterial leafspot of alfalfa

Journal Article · · Plant Dis.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5092296
The interaction of ozone and Xanthomonas alfalfae was investigated on three alfalfa germplasm sources. Foliar injury was assessed for ozone, and for bacterial injuries separately, and for injuries that resulted after reciprocal treatments of ozone and bacteria. Ozone significantly reduced bacterial injury; mean scores were 5.5 for bacteria after ozone treatment vs. 8.2 for bacteria alone. Reciprocally, bacterial infection also significantly reduced ozone injury to foliage. Injury means for ozone were 4.8-5.5, but after bacterial infection, ozone injury was reduced to 2.6. Symptoms for ozone and bacterial injury were distinctly different, and each was determined by the rating scale of 0-9, in which 0 = no injury and 9 = most severe injury. Probable reasons for plant responses to ozone and bacteria are discussed. 15 references, 1 table.
