Public systems provide consumers lower-cost power. [EIA statistics]

Tables prepared by the Energy Information Administration and comparing the average cost for electric service provided by private and public utilities demonstrate that public systems consistently provide their customers with power at a lower cost. The 1976 figures show residential customers of public utilities using 21.7% more power and paying 11.4% less. Comparison of managerial and operating expenses show that managerial expenses for public companies were higher on the basis of revenue but lower on the basis of power sold. Public utilitity production costs have been lower for the past seven years, but all utilities have had sharp cost increases. Other comparisons are made for transmission, distribution, and capital costs.
