Validity of the Glauber approximation when account is taken of the quark structure of the deuteron

The corrections to the elastic hadron-deuteron scattering amplitude that stem from the quark structure of the deuteron are computed. The two-gluon pomeron model, which provides a good description of the hadron-hadron scattering data, is used. It is shown that the Glauber approximation, supplemented by the inelastic corrections, provides a good description of the data on the total and differential pd-scattering cross sections if the admixture of a state of the six-quark bag type in the deuteron wave function is small (< or approx. =2%), or if the S/sup 6/-state oscillator parameter R/sub 6/roughly-equal0.8 fm.
