Design considerations in solar heating large swimming pools

Analytical procedures were developed for determining the monthly and annual heating requirements for large pools. Based on monthly gas consumption data for three large heated California pools, multiple regression analyses were performed to calculate the characteristic gas consumption as a function of monthly heating degree days, monthly horizontal surface insolation, monthly average temperature, and average daily minimum and maximum temperatures. Results of these calculations were applicable in determining the gas consumption reduction resulting from the use of solar energy. Pool covers were considered the most cost-effective method of heat conservation. Procedures for calculating optimum collector type, mounting angle, and area were reviewed, options considered for large swimming pool heating systems include: plastic collectors, direct and indirect unglazed metal collectors, and indirect and direct glazed metal collectors. A decision on which solar system to use must be based on the climate, size of pool, quality of pool chemistry control, mounting location, and funds available.
