Swimming pools: a popular solar application

The application of solar energy systems to the heating of swimming pools is reviewed. The production of low temperature solar collectors often utilized for swimming pool heating increased four-fold between 1974 and 1977. An estimated 45,000 swimming pools may be heated with solar energy. Pool covers are recommended for heated pools and glazing and insulation for collectors are not essential. Collector area should be at least half the surface area of the pool.
