Installing solar pool systems

Journal Article · · Sol. Heat. Cool.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5696191

Recommendations for the selection and installation of solar swimming pool heaters are reviewed. The heat load for the pool is calculated from factors of evaporation, convection. The area of the collectors is generally 50%, radiation, and conduction. Larger collector areas are required for extended swimming seasons. Unglazed collectors are usually composed of plastic, rubber, or metal. Glazed collectors permit reduced collector area requirements and additional winter space heating. Factors in the orientation and mounting of collectors for pool heating are reviewed and piping considerations are explained. Installation of pipes and collectors in a downward slant permits system drain-down to prevent freezing. Control and pump systems are also reviewed.
