Applications of solar heating in swimming pools are described for three pools and one spa located in California. The 1,000 ft/sup 2/ pool and 120 ft/sup 2/ spa system utilize glazed and unglazed low temperature pylypropylene collectors which extend the swimming season to 7-8 mos. Payback is estimated at 2 yrs for the pool and 4 yrs for the spa with an expected fuel savings of $1,600/season for the pool and $250/yr for the spa. A 480 ft/sup 2/ pool utilizes a total of 10 pylypropolene unglazed low temperature collectors with two different orientations. The expected fuel savings are $500/yr with a 6 month swimming season. A total of 400 ft/sup 2/ of polypropolene unglazed, low temperature collectors heat a 800 ft/sup 2/ pool. A special control valve is required for the system because the collectors are mounted on an earth embankment lower than the pool and pumping system. The pool has a 6.5 month swimming season and a fuel savings of $600/season.
