Use the sun to heat your swimming pool
Pool covers and active solar heating systems for extending the swimming season and maintaining warmer pool temperatures are reviewed. Pool covers that reduce convection and evaporation are often clear or translucent sheets of polyethylene with an ultraviolet inhibitor. Floating plastic balls also minimize heat losses and do not have to be removed before using the pool. Active, low temperature pool heating systems are considered highly efficient applications of solar energy and utilize the pool's filter pump and unglazed collectors. Metal or plastic collectors may be used, although plastic collectors in various roll configurations are less expensive. Both a pool cover and an active heating system may be utilized at a greater initial cost. Considerations in owner installation or contractor installation are reviewed.
