A two-day hearing on legislation that would promote the use of methanol as a transportation and utility fuel considered two bills: H.R. 4855 and H.R. 5075, which recognize the cost-effective potential of methanol as a substitute for oil, as well as environmental and reliability advantages. Witnesses from the automobile and fuels industries, transportation experts, and government agency representatives examined the evidence from demonstration fleets in terms of the need for further commercialization efforts and incentives. Other testimony covered its application as a utility boiler fuel. Material submitted for the record follows the text of the two bills and the testimony of 20 witnesses.
