Multiplicity of secondary particles and number of interacting nucleons in collisions of p, d, He, and C with tantalum nuclei at momentum p/sub 0/=4. 2 GeV/nucleon
A target consisting of three tantalum plates (A=181) of thickness 1 mm was placed in the working volume of a two-meter propane chamber. The chamber was exposed to beams of the nuclei p, d, He, and C at momenta per nucleon p/sub 0/=2--5 GeV/c. Cross sections were obtained for inelastic interactions of p, d, He, and C with carbon and tantalum nuclei at p/sub 0/=4.2 GeV/c. The experimental values of the cross sections are in satisfactory agreement with calculations according to a model based on geometric ideas. The dependence of the secondary-particle multiplicity on the number of interacting nucleons of the incident nucleus <..nu../sub i/> has been studied. The multiplicities of ..pi../sup -/ mesons and fast protons (p/sub p/> or =700 MeV/c) increases approximately in proportion to the number <..nu../sub i/>, while the change of the multiplicity of g particles slows down with increase of the number <..nu../sub i/>.
