Effect of gossypol-acetic acid on radioiron utilization in male rats
Mature male Holtzman rats (112 days old) were fed gossypolacetic acid (GAA, 20 mg/kg body weight) daily for 16 weeks in order to determine changes in hematology, reproductive performance, and iron (/sup 59/Fe) utilization. Free, bound, and total gossypol concentrations of various organs were also determined. Male rats were infertile after 16 weeks of treatment. Mean body weight gains of GAA treated rats were significantly less than the mean body weight gains of control rats throughout the 16 week treatment period. Free and bound gossypol were found in all organs that were analyzed. Hematological parameters remained within normal limits throughout the 16 week treatment period. Iron (/sup 59/Fe) incorporation was enhanced in the spleens, livers, bone marrow, and blood of GAA treated rats, and increased as the time after /sup 59/Fe administration increased. Splenic compensation was responsible for maintenance of normal hematology and changes in iron distribution in GAA treated rats.
