An analysis is presented of the confinement of fast ions formed in fusion reactions or through neutral injection in tokamaks with a noncircular cross section. A method is developed for finding the number and spatial distribution of the fast ions which reach the wall of an axisymmetric tokamak with a cross section of arbitrary shape. Equations are derived for the confinement coefficient of ..cap alpha..-particles and the flux of these particles to the wall in tokamaks with an elliptical cross section. A comparison is presented of ..cap alpha..-particle confinement in tokamaks with elliptical and circular cross sections.
