Magnetosonic instability of trapped alpha particles in an elliptical-cross-section tokamak

The excitation of fast magnetosonic waves is studied as these waves undergo a cyclotron interaction with trapped fast thermonuclear ..cap alpha.. particles in an asymmetric tokamak reactor of elliptical cross section. General expressions are derived for the wave growth rate for the cases of small and large deviations from a circular cross section. It is shown that in the excitation of waves with frequencies near the cyclotron harmonics of the strongly trapped ..cap alpha.. particles, bounce resonances can further increase the rate of excitation of fast magnetosonic waves.
