Mr. Santangelo, Director of Energy Management, Johnson and Johnson Corp. (J and J), notes that it is hard to get and maintain a commitment to energy management when there are no headlines today relating energy shortages and crises. The author observes that good industrial planning, however, must consider energy in the overall business plan; further, consideration must be given to providing contingencies in the event of disruption of energy supplies. The J and J Energy Steering Committee consisting of vice presidents and directors of engineering from all J and J companies in the US is very much alive today, Mr. Santangelo says, and has expanded its mission to include conservation and cost avoidance. The Corporate Energy Group administers the functions of the Steering Committee, which are listed and discussed briefly, as well as the aspects dealt with by the Technical Advisory Council, the backbone of energy technology expertise within the corporation.
