The technical program of the 1996 IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES) Summer Meeting officially opened on July 29 with a Plenary Session on Stretching Transmission Capacity by Technology Deployment. The focus of this panel session was on the operational gains achieved by engaging various new electric energy flow control technologies and the economic impact on planning and operation. The moderator for the session was Dr. Karl Stahlkopf, vice-president of Power Delivery at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The panel of experts in the area of advanced transmission system technologies included: William J. Budney, senior vice-president of Transmission and Distribution at Public Service Electric and Gas Company; Bruce Renz, vice-president of Transmission and Distribution at American Electric Power Service Corporation; Jean-Pierre Cerdan, managing director of Research and Development at Electricite de France; Michael Humphries, general manager of Technology and Science at the National Grid Company plc.
