Kinetic regularities of interaction of zinc dialkyldithiocarbamates with peroxide radicals and cumyl hydroperoxide

Journal Article · · Pet. Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
A kinetic study was used to determine the interaction of anti-oxidants-zinc dialkyldithiocarbamates with cumyl peroxy radicals and cumyl hydroperoxide. Effective rate constants of the reaction of cumyl peroxide radicals K/sub 7//sup */ at 60/sup 0/C with di-n-butyldithiocarbamate and zinc di-iso-octyl dithiocarbamate were determined to be (2.9 +/- 0.5) x 10/sup 3/ and (9.6 +/- 1.5) x 10/sup 3/ mole.sec, respectively. Effective rate constants derived in the model reaction of initiated oxidation of cumene in the presence of zinc dialkyl dithiocarbamates are not constants of the elementary stage, but of the gross process. Formulae were derived for the reaction rate constant of cumyl hydroperoxide with zinc di-n-butyldithiocarbamate and di-iso-octyl dithiocarbamate, which were calculated to be 1.14 x 10/sup 6/ exp ((-54,000 +/- 4700)/RT) and 8.3 x 10/sup 4/ exp ((-45,000 +/- 7200))/RT) 1./mole.sec, respectively. Results show that products of decomposition of zinc dialkyl dithiocarbamates take part in reactions with peroxide radicals and cumyl hydroperoxide, intensifying the inhibiting action of antioxidants on oxidation of hydrocarbons. 12 references, 2 figures, 1 table.
