We study the effect of the structure of the components of a mixed catalyst on the decomposition rate of cumyl hydroperoxide (CHP) and compare the results with those obtained in an investigation of the cumene oxidation reaction. Behavioral regularities in the decomposition of cumyl hydroperoxide in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of a zinc salt and an N-heteroaromatic promoter lead to the conclusion that the activity of the mixed catalyst is related to the possible formation of a stable complex between the components of the catalytic system. The nature and structure of the components are of considerable importance to the realization of this possibility. It is proposed that there is a connection between the degree of /sigma/-electron transfer from donor centers in the promoter to the central ion and the initiating properties of the complex catalysts in the cumene oxidation reaction.
