The authors have carried out an experimental study of the decomposition of cumenyl hydroperoxide (CHP) catalyzed by zinc and cadmium naphthenates and by a number of mixtures containing these naphthenates. The results are presented in this communication. The change from zinc (or cadmium) compounds to mixed compositions containing an N-heteroaromatic activator is accompanied by progressive decrease of the alcohol/ketone ratio in the products of catalytic decomposition of CHP at elevated temperatures. An analogous tendency is observed with increase of the donor power of the catalysts used. The observed effects are explained by the influence of the nature of the catalyst on the ratio of the molecular and radical routes of cumyl hydroperoxide decomposition.
