Measurement of differential cross sections for charge exchange of. pi. /sup -/ mesons in carbon at 40 GeV/c

Differential cross sections have been measured for charge exchange of ..pi../sup -/ mesons into ..pi../sup 0/ and eta mesons in C and H nuclei at momentum 40 GeV/c. The characteristics of the resulting spectra are discussed. From comparison of data obtained in C and H, the ratio of the cross sections for absorption of eta and ..pi../sup 0/ mesons by nucleons is found: sigma/sub abs/(etaN)/sigma/sub abs/(..pi../sup 0/N) = 1.00 +- 0.05.
