The differential cross sections were measured for the charge exchange of mesons ..pi../sup -/ mesons into ..pi../sup 0/ mesons on the nuclei Li, Be, C, Al, and Cu and into eta mesons on the nuclei C, Al, and Cu in the range 0< or =-t< or =0.5 (GeV/c/sup 2/) at 40 Gev/c. The experiments were carried out at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator in the PROZA setup. Within the limits of the statistical accuracy the shape of the differential cross sections is independent of the mass number of the target and is described quite well by the Glauber multiple-scattering theory generalized for production processes taking into account the rescattering of the primary and secondary mesons on the nucleons of the nucleus. From comparison of the experimental and theoretical Z dependences of sigma at 40 GeV/c the ratio of the cross sections for the absorption of eta and ..pi../sup 0/ mesons by nucleons is determined to be sigma/sub abs/(etaN)/sigma/sub abs/(..pi../sup 0/N) = 1 +- 0.15, which is in agreement with the predictions of the quark model.
