We report the results of an experimental study of the reaction ..pi../sup -/A/sub z/ ..-->..etaA/sub z/-1, eta..--> gamma gamma.. in the carbon nucleus at a pion momentum 3.3 GeV/c. The differential cross section dsigma/dt for this reaction in the region of squared 4-momentum transfer t/sub min/< or =-t< or =0.4 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ is compared with the differential cross section for the reaction in the free proton measured at the same pion momentum. In the differential cross section in the region -t< or approx. =0.1 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ we observe a minimum which appears more distinctly for carbon than in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p..-->..etan. By comparison of the cross sections of the two reactions in the framework of multiple diffraction scattering theory we have determined the effective number of nucleons in the carbon nucleus Z/sup C//sub ef/ = 3.2 +- 0.7. The dependence Z/sup C//sub ef/(t) is presented in the range of -t from 0 to 0.4 (GeV/c)/sup 2/.
