Distribution of metals of inhaled fly ash in various organs of rats at various periods after exposure

Journal Article · · J. Environ. Sci. Health, Part A; (United States)
After inhalation exposure to coal fly ash 6 hr/day for 15 days, the distribution of metal ions was studied in lung, liver, kidney, heart, small intestine and serum of rats. Tissues were analyzed Na, K, Fe, Ca, Mg, Pb, Zn, Cu, Co, Ni, Cr, Mn and Sr at 1, 7, 15, and 30 days after the last inhalation exposure. The increased levels of the metals were highest one day after the last exposure and at later periods their concentration declined at a rate which varied from metal to metal and from organ to organ. Even 30 days after exposure the retention of some elements in organs and serum of the experimental group was high when compared to that of unexposed controls.
