University expects 33% cut in energy bills

A $3.5 million three-year energy conservation project at American University in Washington, DC will involve 28 of the school's 33 buildings and is expected to save $2.3 million a year in energy costs for a 4.5-year payback. A DOE grant and a Department of Education low-interest loan will finance much of the project, with a bank loan providing the remainder. The project will focus on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to reduce electricity consumption. (DCK)
