EM project saves Notre Dame $280,000/yr

Notre Dame University has saved over $280,000/yr in boiler fuel costs since completing a $1.6 million energy-management project in 1978. A 448-point ECON-VI energy-management system with added thermostats and control valves controlling 22 buildings should have a five-year payback. The system shuts off radiator valves and uses night setbacks to control room temperature. It does not limit electricity demand because peak loads are shaved at the university's power plant, which produces half the school's needs. A 3% 30-year Department of Housing and Urban Development loan financed the project. (DCK)
