A steam line upgrading and submetering program has cut the University of Seattle's energy bills by about 33%, almost double the guaranteed 17% saving and one-year payback. Other major steps to reduce energy consumption included reinsulating steam mains, reinsulating valves and expansion joints, and replacing faulty steam traps. The upgrade was done on the recommendation of Energard Corp., a consulting firm under contract for the university's energy management system.
