Martin Anderson of the Department of Transportation, Frank Von Hippel of the Princeton University Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, and two representatives of the Congressional Budget Office testified at a June 24, 1981 hearing on the potential for fuel savings in the transportation sector. It now appears appropriate to mesh policies that will reduce oil imports and revitalize the automobile industry by increasing the use of fuel-saving technologies. Issues related to fuel efficiency are: the competition of foreign automakers, secondary industries dependent on the auto industry, and the potential for trading in the old fleet of cars for new, more-efficient models.
