Book ·
OSTI ID:6926565

This hearing reviews the Liquid Metal Reactor Program of the US DOE, asking the question of whether this program is necessary to the future of nuclear power and whether it has any serious application to the disposal of high-level radioactive waste to justify the probable expense of the program. The liquid metal reactor would rely on plutonium as a fuel, produced by reprocessing of spent fuel wastes or by using the reactor as a breeder. Also discussed are the proliferation risks of a Liquid Metal Reactor. Principal testifiers include: David, Institute for Science and International Security; Barrett and Brolin, DOE; Coops, American Nuclear Society; Kratzer, independent consultant; Lancelot, National Taxpayers Union; Larsen, Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union; Till, ANL; von Hippel, Princeton University.
