Building an attached solar greenhouse
Design and construction details and recommendations for building an attached solar greenhouse are discussed and building materials are described. All solar greenhouses should have an orientation within 40 degrees of south, double glazing, thermal mass for heat storage, a system for transferring excess heat to rock bed storage in winter, a method of venting or using excess heat in summer, and a means of shading or shuttering the glazing. Options for glazing materials include: glass, fiberglass-reinforced acrylic, clear acrylic plexiglass, Tuffak-Twinwall, a semi-transparent, double-walled sandwich of polycarbonate, polyethylene, or plastic films for the inner layer. The optimum angle for tilting the glass is 20 degrees in addition to the latitude of the area. Two prototype greenhouses are illustrated.
