Solar glazings: a product review

Glazings for solar applications are listed, described, and evaluated. Glasses as well as plastic materials are reviewed. Data presented include manufacturer (and trade name), description, weight (lbs/ft/sup 2/), cost, applications, appearance, installation notes, and miscellaneous information about service life, solar transmittance, impact resistance, etc. The following are listed: (1) glass, tempered-low iron; (2) glass, annealed; (3) acrylic, single and double wall; (4) polycarbonate; (5) cellulose acetate butyrate; (6) fiberglass-reinforced polyester; (7) fluorinated ethylene propylene; (8) polyvinyl fluoride; (9) laminated acrylic/polyester; (10) weatherable polyester; and (11) polyethylene. Visual comparisons (using photographs) are made between various glazing materials. Comparative evaluations of the various glazing materials are summarized in a table in which advantages and disadvantages of each type of glazing are given. A listing of manufacturers with addresses and telephone numbers is included. (MJJ)
