Apparatus for extracting oil from shale

A retort for driving off volatile matter from oil shale is described in which a perforated pipe extends into the shale within the retort and suction means is connected to the pipe for drawing volatilized matter into the pipe through the openings. A means is provided for varying the area of the openings comprising a pipe within the first pipe and having coinciding openings and means for displacing the inner pipe in relation to the outer pipe.
