A retort is described for the distillation of oil shales comprising a cylindrical member having its ends closed and horizontally positioned. A perforated conduit passes centrally and axially of the cylindrical member. One end of the conduit is closed and the other end passes through an end of the retort and projects beyond the end of the retort. A conduit passes through the other end of the retort and receives the closed end of the perforated conduit. A steam pipe is connected with the conduit which is provided with means to discharge steam into the retort. Pipes are connected with the conduit and project radically therefrom. The free ends of the conduits are open. Means are provided for rotating the cylindrical member.
