An apparatus is described for the distillation of oil from oil shales comprising a retort, means for injecting superheated steam into the retort, a chamber mounted upon the retort, a cone-shaped gas collector located in the top of the chamber and provided at its top with a dome, an outlet pipe connected with the dome, and a hopper mounted directly above the dome of the gas collector and spaced therefrom so that the oil shale may flow down onto the dome along the outer surface of the gas collector to be distributed in the chamber above the retort.
