An apparatus is described for extracting oil consisting of a furnace, narrow metal retorts spaced at the sides and ends from the walls of the furnace, and a means to supply heat in the furnace. A plurality of perforated pipes spaced apart in a vertical plane longitudinally is provided in the retorts connected in groups by discharge pipes. Valve-controlled pipes lead from the perforated pipes, and a means to pass crushed oil-bearing shale through the retorts is provided.
