Hearings on three House bills (H.R. 1029, H.R. 1447, and H.R. 2488) considered problems facing the nuclear power industry and efforts to modify the organization and the procedures of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Both safety and economic concerns dominated the testimony by representatives of citizen groups, electric utilities, state and federal regulators, and others. The proposed legislation would amend the Atomic Energy Act to encourage design standardization, which would, in turn, expedite the regulatory process. The hearing record consists of the texts of the three bills, statements and testimony by 29 witnesses, and additional material and information submitted for the record.
