Turbine competition sharpens

The shrinking market for new hydropower turbines worldwide is accelerating consolidation in the industry. In large part, the consolidation in the industry is a European phenomena. Old-line U.S. companies have largely abandoned the hydro turbine market. The major vendors are now European- and Japanese-based. With the increasing integration of the European Economic Community, the incentive for European companies is toward the international market. To compete successfully, European firms are restructuring as big diversified participants, capable of offering a broad array of hydropower related services to projects of widely varying sizes. Featured in the list of services are the furnishing of the full range of turbine types and sizes, turbine governors, gates and valves, penstocks and bifurcations, and engineering and installation. In the future, the industry will undoubtedly be dominated by fewer and bigger competitors whose survival will require a careful definition of specific, exploitable markets. Most observers see the market as segmented in three parts: The market for new large turbines (runner diameters greater than three meters), the market for new small and mini turbines, and the rehabilitation market.
