The competitive edge. [German power market]

Opportunities exist in the German power market for companies with development experience. The first step to entry is understanding the market. The European utility scene has long been an insiders' game characterized by monopolies and captive markets, though in recent years, a trend toward increased competition has caused utilities to diversify and become more cost-conscious. Primarily equipment manufacturers with lower cost bases could benefit from this situation. As well, developers could benefit, especially if they form consortia with such vendors. Non-German developers perhaps have the best opportunities and will want to follow developments such as those leading to more competition. A number of European governments have carried out privatization programs. For example, Britain's radical restructuring has shaken up power market players. Faced with flat demand in their domestic markets, utilities have been driven by such privatization efforts to seek better investment opportunities outside their national boundaries. This has brought a new era of internationalization in Europe. Asking themselves how this era will work out, many Europeans look to the US, where this process began earlier. The first competitive advantage is simply the experience US companies have gained from being the first utilities to be challenged by deregulation of a market that had already been highly privatized. 2 figs.
