Adriamycin and x-radiation effects upon an experimental solid tumor resistant to therapy. [Rats]

Ten mg/kg Adriamycin to hepatoma H-4-II-E bearing rats cause a significant slowdown in tumor growth and a 10% rat kill. Assays for clonogenicity fail to detect tumor cell-kill at this dose, however. Fifteen hundred rad x-rays cause a comparable growth delay, but also reduce the clonogenic fraction to 0.02. Adriamycin treatment of previously irradiated tumors at a point in tumor regrowth when maximum sensitivity to this agent is expected fails to cause additional cell-kill or delay the time of recovery of the clonogenic fraction.
