Quasi-. cap alpha. -particle mechanism of. pi. meson double charge exchange in the /sup 12/C nucleus

A quasi-..cap alpha..-particle mechanism of ..pi.. meson double charge exchange in the /sup 12/C nucleus is proposed. The corresponding theory with use of the basis of hyperspherical functions for description of discrete and continuous spectra of three- and four-body systems is developed. It is shown that the effect of final-state interactions between four nucleons of the same kind emitted by the nucleus in the process of ..pi.. meson double charge exchange is highly important. As a result, it turns out that theoretical curves of the total cross section for double charge exchange as a function of the energy of the incident ..pi.. meson calculated with the use of various forms of nucleon-nucleon potentials noticeably differ. The urgency of the experimental study of the double charge exchange in nuclei of the ..cap alpha..-particle type is shown.
