Theory of photodisintegration of the /sup 12/C nucleus into three. cap alpha. particles in the hyperspherical basis

A computation scheme for the reaction ..gamma..+/sup 12/C..-->..3..cap alpha.. is developed within the framework of the three-..cap alpha..-particle model of the /sup 12/C nucleus using a basis of hyperspherical functions in the momentum representation. The proposed method makes it possible to take into account interactions between all the ..cap alpha.. particles in both the initial and final states. It is shown that if the one-..cap alpha..-particle mechanism of ..gamma..-quantum absorption is proposed, than allowance for the interaction at the end of the reaction leads to a substantial change in the results of the plane-wave approximation, namely, the reaction cross section decreases by two orders of magnitude. On the other hand, in the case of the two-..cap alpha..-particle absorption mechanism this interaction leads to a qualitative change in the cross-section curve, wherein the maximum of the cross section becomes narrow. The results of the calculations lead to the conclusion that the three-..cap alpha..-particle photodisintegration of the /sup 12/C nucleus proceeds mainly via the mechanism of two-..cap alpha..-particle quadrupole absorption of the gamma quanta. This conclusion agrees with preliminary data of recent experiments.
