Midwest users stay with gas in spite of oil price drop

Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)
OSTI ID:5317099
Except for some spot switching, Midwest industrial energy users plan to continue using natural gas despite the decline in residual oil prices. Fuel switching is occurring on the East and West Coasts, and gas utilities are offering incentives to keep their customers. Midwest oil suppliers caution against large-scale substitution, which could deplete the surplus and reverse the price trend. Users cite the cost of fuel transportation among their reasons for staying with gas, but the gas utilities see the regulatory tradition of favoring residential users as one hurdle to keeping industrial customers.
