The Nuclear Waste Policy Act Amendment of 1986 amends the 1982 law to enable those states most affected by the siting of high-level radioactive waste or spent nuclear fuel repositories to participate in the site selection process. The bill directs DOE to reconsider the sites selected for characterization for the first repository, and makes crystalline rock sites eligible for characterization. It also calls upon DOE to prepare an environmental impact statement for certain activities under site characterization.
