The Nuclear Waste Policy Reform Amendments Act of 1986, H.R. 4637, amends the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to provide for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in a single repository. The bill, which was introduced and referred to both the Energy and Commerce and the Interior and Insular Affairs Committees, limits federal construction and licensing to a single site and places a moratorium on activity to locate a second site. The bill also removes the deadlines for characterizing and recommending a second site. Geological restrictions remove crystalline rock sites from consideration. A review commission would review available scientific information and report to Congress no later than January 31, 1999.
