Cumulative production of. pi. /sup 0/ mesons at 180/sup 0/ angle in the reaction. pi. /sup -/C. --> pi. /sup 0/X at 3. 8 GeV/c

The energy spectrum of ..pi../sup 0/ mesons produced from carbon nuclei at lab angles 160--180/sup 0/ by 3.8-GeV/c ..pi../sup -/ mesons was measured in the kinetic-energy range 100< or =T< or =500 MeV. The ..pi../sup 0/-meson spectrum is represented in the form of an invariant cross section Ed/sup 3/sigma/dp-bar/sup 3/, where E and p are respectively the total energy and momentum of the produced pion. The data were parametrized with the aid of the equation Ed/sup 3/sigma/dp-bar/sup 3/ = A exp (-T/T/sub 0/), where T is the ..pi../sup 0/-meson kinetic energy. The parameters characterizing the invariant cross section for ..pi../sup 0/-meson production at T = 0 and the slope of the exponential were found to be A = 212 +- 63 mb x c/sup 3//GeV/sup 2/ and T/sub 0/ = 61 +- 4 MeV.
