The structure functions (Ed/sup 3/sigma/dp/sup 3/) have been studied for ..pi../sup + -/ mesons produced in ..pi../sup -/ /sup 12/C interactions at p/sub (/-=40 GeV/c as a function of the transverse momentum p/sub perpendicular/. For p/sub perpendicular/> or =0.15 GeV/c the distributions have an exponential form, the slope parameters for ..pi../sup + -/ mesons emitted forward in the laboratory system being close to each other and not greatly differing from the slope parameters in pp and p-nucleus interactions over a wide range of primary energies. The structure functions for leading particles have been studied individually, and the A-dependence of the ratio of the invariant cross sections for ..pi../sup -/ /sup 12/C and ..pi../sup -/p interactions has been investigated in various intervals of transverse momenta of the secondary ..pi../sup + -/ mesons.
