Two-particle correlations in inclusive pion-carbon interactions at 40 GeV/c

We have studied correlations in rapidity and distributions in the difference of azimuthal angles of ..pi.. mesons produced in ..pi../sup -/C interactions at p/sub ..pi../-=40 GeV/c. The data on azimuthal correlations were obtained with different restrictions on rapidity and transverse momenta of the ..pi.. mesons. A comparison is made with the results for ..pi../sup -/p interactions at the same primary ..pi../sup -/-meson energy. The shape of the correlation functions for ..pi../sup -/C events turns out to be close to the corresponding distributions for ..pi../sup -/p interactions, and the correlations themselves in collisions with nuclei are somewhat weaker than in pion-nucleon collisions.
