Semi-inclusive ..pi../sup -/p, ..pi../sup -/n, and ..pi../sup -12/C interactions at 40 GeV/c are analyzed and the properties of the secondary particles (..pi../sup + -/ mesons and photons) are examined. It is found that the structure functions for the ..pi../sup + -/ mesons and photons in the central region depend only weakly on the nature of the target (p,n, or /sup 12/C). The charged-secondary-multiplicity dependences of the structure functions in the fragmentation regions are discussed for ..pi../sup -/p, ..pi../sup -/n, and ..pi../sup -/ /sup 12/C interactions. The transverse-momentum distributions of the secondary particles are also analyzed.
