Search for cumulative eta mesons in the reaction. pi. /sup -/Cu. -->. eta(180/sup 0/)X at momentum 3. 8 GeV/c

We have measured the energy spectrum of 2..gamma.. events in the kinetic-energy interval 0< or =T< or =300 MeV at an angle 180/sup 0/ in the laboratory system produced in copper nuclei by ..pi../sup -/ mesons with momentum 3.8 GeV/c. The spectrum of 2..gamma.. events in the mass interval 549 +- 50 MeV is represented in the form of the invariant cross section Ed/sup 3/sigma/dp-bar/sup 3/, where E and p are respectively the total energy and momentum of the 2..gamma.. events. On the basis of the experimental data we have determined an upper limit of the invariant cross section for production of eta mesons in the reaction ..pi../sup -/Cu..-->..eta(180/sup 0/)X at the 90% confidence level.
