Monitoring of the seepage regime of earth structures

This article reports on the seepage regime of the earth dams of the Dneprodzerzhinsk hydroelectric power plant and on the methods employed in the continuous monitoring and inspection of the seepage. The dams are composed of sand with various concrete slab reinforcements at critical areas and riprap and other ground cover used where erosion might be problematic. The main stabilization of the seepage behavior of the dams occurred during the first year after reservoir fill. It was measured according to pressure and temperature. An increase in seepage in the summer is explained by the effect of temperature on the permeability and hydraulic conductivity of the dam material. This increase was found not to affect reliability.
