Three-dimensional seepage in the cores of rock-and-earth-fill dams

A method of calculating three-dimensional seepage in rock and earth fill dams with cores of different profiles is presented. Since the permeability of the soil in the core is 100 or more times lower than that of the support prisms, the seepage calculation of the dam essentially reduces to determination of the required seepage parameters in the core of the dam. The proposed method is based on the analogy between traces of three-dimensional vertical seepage bands in the plane of the shore slope and streamlines with vertical plant-parrallel seepage in the core. Computational relationships for the determination of seepage parameters, such as height of leakage and position of depression surface, seepage rate, and discharge pressure gradients are given. 8 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.
